Let me introduce you to my third baby, er, i mean my camera.

I get a lot of people asking me what kind of camera i have and if i'd recommend it. By "a lot" i mean like four of you. But i figure if 4 of you went to the trouble of sending me an email then there's probably more out there wondering the same thing. And besides, who wouldn't want to talk about cameras?

But anyway, the answer is a Nikon D40x, and yes i love my camera and would highly recommend it. If you want to spend that amount of money on a camera that is. You can buy a smaller, simpler point and shoot camera that would also do a wonderful job.
But we're not talking about them today. Today it's all about a Nikon DSLR.
The D40x came out in 2007 and was replaced in 2008 by the almost identical D60.
One of the reasons I like my camera that it is easy to use for beginners. The auto mode does a great job. But you can switch it to manual mode as you learn more and want to try your hand at that. I have to admit. All the pictures that I have on my blog have been taken with the auto mode. One day i'm going to sit down and read the camera manual and learn how to really use my camera. But for now the auto is doing the job for me.
My camera is also a lot lighter than other DSLRs. It fits well in my hand and isn't too heavy.
Something else that was important to me when i was looking at cameras was the start up time shutter speed. Those of you with little kids know that you have to be fast to catch those special moments. This camera is ready to shoot as soon as you turn it on and the shutter speed is super fast! Perfect for catching those fleeting moments.
The battery is a rechargeable Lithium Ion battery. A charger came with the camera. The charge seems to last a long time. Depending of course how many pictures you are taking and if you use the flash or not.

It has a nice big screen for reading the menus and reviewing your photos.
The model that came out before the D40x was the D40 and i've heard it does a great job too and is less expensive.

That is great information about your camera. It does take wonderful photos...Emily needs a new camera so this post will be very helpful to her!
They are going to enter some of their photography in a local fair this week and then next week as well. I hope they do well!

I'm so glad you posted about this. I've been researching DSLR cameras and most recommendations seem to lean towards Cannon and Nikon... with the majority choosing Nikon. Is your camera one that can grow with you? I've heard most about the D80 and D90 versions, but I definitely need one that is user friendly...but also want to be able to purchase new lenses as I learn how to use it better.

I, too, love my camera. Mine is a Canon Rebel XS EOS. It is also a digital SLR, and I, too, have to admit that I have only been using the automatic settings. My old film camera was a fully manual SLR camera and I absolutely loved it. It took me a long time to decide to switch to digital, and I swore I would always use the manual, but I haven't had the time to memorize everything. These digital with the automatic And manual settings have a lot of buttons to learn about! I look forward to learning all about the manual features in the not-to-distant future, I hope.
