Words Of Wisdom

Two of my friends have gotten married recently and I was thinking it would be fun to see what words of wisdom you would give to a newlywed couple.

We can learn a lot from each other and i am looking forward to hearing what you have to share. Please share even if you're not married yet. What do you plan on putting into practice when you do get married? And those of you who have been married a while, what have you learned?

Love and Respect. This is a book by Emmerson Eggerich and Robert and hosted the DVD conference in May.

Women are to respect your husband and men love their wife. When this happens we stay off the crazy cycle. God calls us to do this in his word!

Open communication!! I think communication is a HUGE part of marriage, without it, it just doesnt work. And secondly I would say to PRAY as a couple. When we come before the Lord as a couple we are focused on Him and united.

I have two favorite pieces of advice that were given to me before my wedding day.

First, marriage is a series of peaks and valleys. When you are in the valley, don't despair! It won't last forever. When you are on a peak, don't get prideful! Keep praying for grace.

And second, on those days that you find it difficult to love your spouse (and you will have those days--lol) do it for Jesus. Love him or her anyway as a gift to our Lord.

Congratulations to your friends!

There has been great advice given, I would just add to be "good willed" toward your spouse. Assume that they are being the same to you...thinking the best of the other. That way when they say something hurtful, you don't go right away to "he hates me", but it allows you to think, "wow, that is not like him."

Look for ways to serve your spouse, not expecting anything in return.

A relationship, marriage, kids won't 'complete' you until you are complete in Christ and Christ alone.

"My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ..." Colossians 2:2

Wow, there's so much great advice here already. The only thing I would like to mention is that, along with the communication, just remember that "listening" is a big part of communication. It's easy to only half-listen while you're thinking about what you want to say next, but it's really important to listen "completely".
